Walter’s restraint had been pushed to the limit all week. He had no viable reason to contact Shirley. Judge Wallis was still considering if the case should be taken to court and Julia was fulfilling her promise of making sure none of the women went anywhere without her knowledge and approval. He hadn’t asked her to do that; she’d volunteered and called him with regular updates.
That wasn’t his issue. His lay deep within him. He wanted to see Shirley. Like a kid who wanted a bike. She had been on his mind since they’d met, but after kissing her... That was all he could think about. How perfect that first little stolen kiss had been.
It had been perfect, but kissing her, holding her, had opened up old wounds.
Lucy.
He couldn’t go down that road again. It had been hell. Loving someone who hadn’t loved him back. It had turned him into a different person. A person he hadn’t wanted to be and, in some ways, still was. For it had changed him and he was still working on putting it all behind him.
It had been four years. Five since he’d first met Lucy. Since kissing Shirley, thoughts about how wrong things had gone started haunting him like it had all happened yesterday rather than years ago.
He’d thought his life had reached perfection those first few weeks with Lucy. Fortune, fame, a beautiful woman on his arm. Everything had seemed to just fall into place. The fast rise of the movie industry had given him a clear and clean route to fortune. Arthur had thought it was a crazy idea to put such focus on contract litigation, but Walter hadn’t. It had taken hard work and long hours, but his dedication had paid off. He’d become the lawyer everyone in Hollywood wanted as movie studios had sprouted up throughout the city. His name had gained clout for months on end. Earned clout. And his bank account had reflected that. Still did.
He hadn’t been surprised when Lucy had contacted him, but he had been surprised by her affection for him. He’d still thought of himself as an outsider, an orphan from Nebraska. Yes, he was a success, but as a lawyer. Not as a man. Lucy had changed that. She’d made him become an integral part of the glitz and glam of Hollywood.
It had been flattering at first. Lucy had been an actress and had played her part to perfection. Had sucked him in just like she had moviegoers to her films.
The phone on his desk rang, and for a moment, Walter considered not answering it. There were a limited number of people who had his phone number, and few of them would call on a Saturday. He stared at the phone as it rang again. Council Member Dean Smith and Mel Cartwright both called him here rather than at his office.
Julia called him here, too, which was why he answered the phone.
“It’s Mel,” the caller said as soon as Walter lifted the earpiece.
